The combination of MS SharePoint and DITA, offers a host of features and functionality:

• Integration with XMetaL Author Enterprise for MS SharePoint allows check-in and check-out of documents, cross-reference and related links to other topics, as well as links to images and other media objects in the MS SharePoint CMS repository.
• Automated publishing by selecting any map or topic directly in MS SharePoint via integration with the DITA Open Toolkit for generating PDF, HTML Help, Eclipse Infocenter, XHTML and other formats, as well as full support for customized style sheets and custom publishing options.
• During upload and check-in, metadata is extracted from DITA content and stored in the MS SharePoint repository, allowing metadata fields to be searched, filtered and reported.
• View topic types and titles extracted from the DITA content, making it easier to access documents in the repository.
• Links between files are recorded and easily viewed and tracked to understand how topics are linked and referenced, where topics are used in maps and relationship tables, where images are used.
• Automatic link integrity maintenance allows authors to move or rename files in the repository without the danger of breaking links.
• Authors can easily manage translations to multiple languages, review workflow and publish translated publications directly from MS SharePoint to various outputs such as PDF, HTML Help, Eclipse InfoCenter and other formats.
• Revision management via branching creates a snapshot of a publication map allowing managers to keep, manage and maintain specific releases of a publication that were delivered to customers at different points in the product release cycle, without impacting the ability to continue ongoing development of shared living content.
• Easy export of maps or topics with all related files included in the exported file.
• Full-text and advanced search based on metadata allows users to take advantage of the search results more easily.
• Links can be made to other documents in the MS SharePoint repository to track when enterprise and engineering documents are used as source material for content development.
• Full workflow integration based on MS SharePoint functionality.
